UK Border Agency to name and shame offending businesses

The UK Border Agency will start publishing quarterly reports detailing the penalties given to individuals or organisations caught employing illegal workers in an attempt to name and shame offending businesses. All employers have a duty to check that all existing and new employees are entitled to work in the UK.

Ghuffar Usman, Director of Usman Khan Immigration Solicitors said that “illegal working causes damaging social and economic problems for the UK. It undercuts businesses that operate within the UK immigration laws, undermines British workers and ultimately exploits migrant workers”.

The changes shifts the burden of carrying out immigration checks from the Home Office to the individual employer with very serious civil and criminal penalties for any breaches. Employers who employ illegal workers face a civil penalty of up to £10,000 for each illegal worker.
